Here are two recordings from the evening of October 1st, 2021 at Midwaste Space Peoples in Garfield Park, Chicago, recorded by Jonathan Valdez. These takes are separated by a few hours and the discovery of a body. One is a rehearsal, performed mostly for each other and an incidental audience, and the other a live performance. After rehearsal, as people came in, a figure was noted slumped against the back gate, lit by a humming street lamp. As a growing crowd danced inside, the body- an unknown with a needle sticking out of his foot- was attempted to be resuscitated, with endless chest compressions and two syringes of narcan. A transient walked by and improvised something like last rites, a prayer while he rifled through the body's pockets for money, or drugs. Nick waited out back for an ambulance, and when the EMT's arrived they clarified the man had been dead for at least 4 hours. With nothing to be done, we went to our instruments, and played, as Georgie Shaefer's 16mm film loops unspooled over us, a flickering light just ahead.
